Overview

Lemosho route is an improve to Shira route which begins with long drive from Moshi to Lemosho gate. The hikes start from the gate to Mti mkubwa camp which is in the forest zone. In its day one start with few hours of walk and at low altitude level, which gives high chance of acclimatization. The success of the route is high to 98% with Kilipower Adventure. The route begins from west crossing the shira plateau with an amazing panoramic vistas then later traverse to underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice filed before summiting from south east of the mountain at Barafu camp. This route is considered most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro, but for our research and experience it’s at large offers the same scenery as Machame route. It is highly recommended using this route as its success is very high and have a varied beauty and amazing scenery, although nowadays is more populated than Machame route.

Itinerary

Lemosho Gate (2,100 meters) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 meters)

Distance: ~5.5km

Trekking time2:3 hours

Vegetation Zone: Rainforest

The Lemosho Route departs from the far West side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Getting to Londorossi Gate (2,100 meters) takes approximately 2 hours from Moshi .At the gate you will register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities before getting back into vehicles to be transported to the starting point. During the wet season the track can be very inaccessible to vehicles and you may need to walk the last few miles to the starting point. To providing you a lunch box before trekking to mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m) Dinner will be served when you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp.

 Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 m) to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters)

 Distance: ~16km Trekking time: 6-8 hours

But for people take 8 days they have chance to stop to shira 1 camp while for the 7 days skipping it.also for the people of seven days may have over night and they will skip at karanga but its real better to skip from here.

Vegetation Zone: Rainforest / Low Alpine Zone

Day two starts with a gradual hike through the final stretch of the rainforest zone and then gets steeper as you approach the low alpine moorland zone. The trek is a long one that stops briefly for lunch at Shira Camp 1 which is on the western edge of the Shira Plateau; just over 8km from your starting point. You then continue on your hike across and up the Shira plateau to Shira Camp 2 at 3,850 meters. The plateau is exposed so be prepared for a cold night with temperatures getting below zero.

Shira Camp (3,850 meters) to Lava Tower (4,600 meters) and then Barranco Camp (3,900 meters)

Distance: ~11km

Trekking time: 5-6 hours

Vegetation Zone: Low alpine zone / High alpine zone

That day you will join trekkers from Machame route and taking over night at barranco.

On day three you will start trekking due east from the Shira Plateau, passing through the ‘Garden of the Senecio’s. The landscape rapidly becomes desert-like as you approach Lava Tower and the Shark’s Tooth formation at 4,600 meters You will have lunch at Lava Tower before descends to Barranco Camp 3,900 meters where you will spend the night at a very similar elevation as the night before. Climbing high and sleeping low is a good way to acclimatise.

Barranco Camp (3,900 meters) to Karanga Camp (3,960 meters)

Distance: ~10km

Trekking time: 7-8 hours

Vegetation Zone: High alpine zone

On day four you will be presented with the relatively steep Barranco ‘Breakfast’ climb, a 257 meter scramble up the Barranco Wall. Be prepared to use all four limbs as you traverse the wall to the top of the Karanga Valley. From here you will follow a path that sojourns through many inclines and declines to Karanga Camp. For those on an seven/eight day hike, this will be your camp for the night. And for people of seven days skipping this instead of shira 1 you will go to barafu. At Barafu you will have an early dinner and for some much needed rest before your summit attempt which begins at midnight. Please make sure that you have organized all your gear for the summit. You will be awoken in the dark and searching for your headlamp or camera at this time is not a good way to start your summit attempt.

Karanga camp (3995m) to Barafu camp (4673m)

Distance: 4km

Hiking Time: 4-5hours,

Vegetation: Alpine Desert

After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4673m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.

Barafu Camp (4,673 meters) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) and then Mweka Camp (3,100 meters)

Distance: ~5km ascent to the peak (UHURU PEAK)

Trekking Time: 6-7hours

Zone: Summit

Day six is summit night (and day)! You will be awoken around 23:30 with hot tea and biscuits. Hopefully you have managed to get a few hours’ sleep; don’t worry if you haven’t as most people struggle to sleep before summit night. Do however make sure that all your kit, including warm clothes, headlamp, insulated water reserves and snacks are ready for a sharp departure at 00:00. The trek up Kibo is steep and slow. The trick is to keep your momentum moving forward, one step at a time. It takes about 6-7hours to reach the top of the crater rim where you will see the sign for Stellar Point (5,739 meters This is not the summit of Kilimanjaro. You still have another 156 meters of altitude to walk around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). I recommend resting briefly at Stellar Point and potentially having some hot tea or hot chocolate. Take a moment to savoir where you have got to and then dig deep for the energy to push for the summit. Over 30% of climbers stop at Stella Point but most can make it to the summit if they muster the metal strength to push through. After reach at the peak you have 3hour to the base camp where you leave during mid night hence you have one hours sleep before Mweka 7km or high camp 4km.The descent can be very grueling on your joints. It is recommend you use trekking poles and potentially wear gaiters to avoid fine glacial scree getting into your boots. Mweka is situated in the upper part of the rain-forest zone. The richness of oxygen and moisture in the air will be a very welcome surprise.

Mweka Camp (3,100 meters) to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters)

Distance: ~10km / 6 miles

Trekking time: 3-4hours

Zone: Rain forest.

Day seven is the final day of trekking. By now you will be exhausted and probably only thinking about a hot shower. The trek is a pleasant one through the lower rain- forested slopes and down to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). Although you cover 10km the trek only takes 3-4 hours. Assuming you successfully reach Stellar Point or Uhuru Peak you will be presented with official certificates – a silver certificate for the stella point and a gold certificate for Uhuru point.
